Firewise - Some stories from Room 1...

Honk! Honk! The fire brigade came to our school to show us how to keep safe when there’s a fire.  When there’s a fire shout out “Fire! Fire! Fire!”
In the olden days they used red and blue lights to say get out of the way.
When there’s a fire, get down, get low and don’t go back in the burning house.   If there is a fire and you are trapped, feel the door and see if there’s a fire. If there is a fire call 111.

The alarm makes this noise “ weeellll, weeelll, weeellll” until the fire stops.

Today the fire fighters came to my classroom.  They told me about fire safety.  If there are lighters or matches lying around you must give them to an adult.  If there is a candle near a surface, curtain or a blanket it could start a fire and the smoke will rise up to the smoke detector. Beep! Beep! Beep! If there’s a fire call 111 for the fire truck and the police will come and the ambulance too.  I wish I could be a fire fighter.

Always be firewise – remember the rules – Get down, get low, get out fast!”  Today the fire fighters came to our school.  They told us a lot about smoke and fires.  It was very exciting!  The brave, important firefighters had a red fire engine that was very speedy.  I think fire fighters are super heroes.

After morning tea, Mrs Woods told us that the fire fighters were talking to a class and just then … the fire fighters radios went off so they went running out of the classroom to their fire engine.  The fire fighters went speeding along the road until they got the their problem.  It was so fun!

The fire truck came to our school today.  The fire engine is red. We hopped in the fire fighter truck.
Don’t play with matches – give them to an adult because they can burn you.  Candles start big fires.
The smoke is poisonous.  Get down, get low and get out fast!  We crawled out of the classroom.
The phone number is 111.

Maths is Awesome

In Room 1 Maths is a favourite.  We are encouraged to "take the lid off" and try to go beyond.  This means attempting rich tasks that seem impossible, but with lots of encouragement, talking and doing, we manage to succeed.

We loved learning about Place Value and Odd and Even Numbers.  We are very proud of our Place Value Street and our Odd and Even Creatures.

Here an example of a rich task involving adding digits.  We really got good at recognising the patterns in the numbers.

SWIMMING AT ONEKAWA POOLS

We are now swimming at Onekawa Pools.  We are BIG kids now and swim in the big lane pool.  Some of us can only just touch the bottom, but we don't mind.

We love the big pool, even if the water is colder!

We are so close to being able to swim by ourselves!

Zaine and Seven are excited about swimming.

Room 1 are ready to go, go go!!

This is the biggest pool ever!  So much fun!

Mother's Day

We made a Mother's Day Card with a difference.  We wrote about why our Mums are so special to us.

UNISON and Safe Sparks

We had Anna and Gooch visit us from Unison today.  We learned a lot about being safe around electricity.  It was a great morning.  Here are a few pictures from today for you to see...

Gooch showing us how the harness works. Look - no hands!

He uses the pole to fix problems and keep safe while doing it.  He wears protective clothing too.

Rooms 1 and 2 listening carefully to what Gooch tells us about electricity safety.

This box is not a toy! You need to remember that!

ANZAC TED

We loved the book called "Anzac Ted" by Belinda Landsberry.  We wrote postcards to Anzac Ted, wrote a story about Anzac Story and made our own special Anzac Ted's.  We used fabric - which was really hard to cut, glued on noses, eyes and buttons too.  We really hope you like them.

ANZAC - We will remember them...

Room 1 have spent a lot of time learning about ANZAC and what it means.  We have read books, completed art activities, asked and answered questions we had too.  We all went to the school ANZAC Service on Friday and Dylan shared his retell of Simpson and his Donkey.  He did a great job!  Here are some photos and stories that we would like to share:

Our ANZAC wall - poppies, soldiers and more poppies!

Poppies on parade in our classroom window

Simpson and His Donkey

Jack Simpson moved to Australia.  He worked in the bush, on a cattle station and in the gold mines.

One day he heard that the Germans and the English were fighting.  Jack signed up for the war.

First, he went to Egypt and trained for the war.

When he saw the army, Jack saw the bullets coming at him.  Jack went to Anzac Cove.  He saw the Turkish army.

Jack Simpson saw a donkey.  Jack called the donkey Duffy.  Jack and Duffy rescued 300 soldiers in 24 days.  But Jack got shot.  The other soldiers buried Jack.  The soldiers put a cross up and planted poppies in the ground.

Simpson and His Donkey

Jack Simpson lived in Australia before the war.  He worked in the bush, worked on a cattle station and in the gold mines.

One day he heard that the Germans were fighting the English.  So he signed up for the war.  First he went to Egypt where he got trained as a Red Cross worker.

The war was at Anzac Cove.  They saw gun bullets, and Turkish army soldiers.  He was worried.  Lots of soldiers died or were injured.  They lived in trenches that had rats in them.

Jack found a donkey.  He called him Duffy.  Jack and Duffy helped many soldiers.  Jack helped 300 soldiers in 24 days.

One day he decided to help more soldiers.  An enemy sniper shot Jack. They buried him with poppies.  They were sad.

Simpson and His Donkey

Jack Simpson went to Australia before the war.  In Australia Jack had some jobs.  They were in the bush, on a cattle station, and in the gold mines.

One day Jack signed up for war.  Jack was very nervous as he was sailing to Egypt for his training.  Then Jack went to Anzac Cove where the Turkish army was fighting the English and the Germans were fighting the English.

A lot of soldiers died but Jack Simpson saved many others because Jack found a donkey which he named Duffy.  Together Jack and Duffy saved 300 soldiers in 24 days.

One day while Jack was walking with Duffy an enemy sniper shot Jack.  The soldiers carried Jack back and the soldiers buried Jack with a cross with a few poppies.  The soldiers were very sad.

Discovery Time

We love Discovery Time on Friday mornings.  This our chance to invent, create, investigate, explore and have fun with lots of different things.  The teachers love it too.  We talk a lot about what we are creating or doing.  We explore all the different classrooms and take bits from one and take it to the next, and we end up with fabulous creations.  Dress ups is a favourite time for lots of us.  Lots of the girls love dressing up in Mrs Woods' wedding dress and her bridesmaid's dress too. There are always activities for us to do inside and outside - so many choices!!

CRICKET WORLD CUP
ROOM 1 AND ROOM 5 MAKE CRICKET SHIRTS!

Room 5 and 1 got together and worked on making Cricket Shirts for the children from Room 1.  Room 5 children were responsible for getting the ideas from the Year 2, Room 1 children, drawing them on their design plan, and ensuring that the original design ended up on the finished shirt.  Everyone was on task and loved the whole project.  Room 1 children wrote some stories too.  Here are some pictures and stories...

My buddy’s name is a country’s name, it is Paris.  She was so nice.  I liked the way she asked me what patterns I wanted on my T-shirt. I felt nervous at the start but at the end I felt awesome.  Paris really helped me and gave me heaps of ideas.  She told me what countries there were.  I had to show her how to draw swirls because she hasn’t done them in a long time.  The T-shirts could actually fit us!
There were lots of patterns on my T-shirt.  Our buddies had to measure us so that they know how much they needed to cut.  It felt a bit funny.  Today our buddies are dyeing them.  Tomorrow they are coming back to our classroom to finish our T-shirts.  by Lily

I am very nervous.  My buddy is coming from Room 5.  When he came into the classroom he had a bit of paper in his hand.  He made a shirt and he is a good drawer.  My name will be there on the back of my t-shirt.  He put a trophy on my T-shirt.  Room 5 are going to paint it today.  They are coming back on Friday to colour it in.  by Rylee
Rylee is very happy with his shirt.  What a great team Hawaiki and Rylee made.

I was excited when I saw our buddies.  I forgot my buddy’s name but I will ask him tomorrow.  We designed a cricket shirt.  It had kiwis on it.  I had my name on the back.  I enjoyed making a T-shirt with my buddy.

The finished shirts! Don't we look fabulous!!

The whole team celebrating our success!

ART DECO AND THE STEAM TRAIN TO HASTINGS

Here are some photos of our trip to Hastings on the Steam Train and then our time at Cornwall Park.  We all got dressed up in our Art Deco costumes.  We had a great morning in Hastings exploring the park, having our morning tea and lunch, playing games and playing on the playground.

We are on our way. For some of us it was our first trip on a train!
Three beautiful Art Deco girls
And three more gorgeous girls!
These two sisters were very excited to be on the train!

We were starving when we arrived - food!
We really did try to count the ducks!

More eating! Lunch this time.
